['sleɪtə], John Clarke, amerikanischer Physiker, * Oak Park (Illinois) 22. 12. 1900, ✝ Sanibel Island (Fla.) 28. 7. 1976; Professor an der Harvard University, am Massachusetts Institute of Technology und an der University of Florida. Slater arbeitete mit N. Bohr und H. A. Kramers an der Dispersionstheorie (1924), später führte er grundlegende Untersuchungen zum quantenmechanischen Mehrteilchenproblem, zur theoretischen Festkörperphysik, zur Atom- und Molekülstruktur und über Mikrowellen durch.
